Brief description
The project analyzes how inclusive institutions influenced economic inequality in mountainous areas Italy between 1500 and 1800. It focuses on how the management of the commons and the use of direct taxation, determined by unequal access to political decisions, contributed to the rise of inequality. During this period, the emergence of the "fiscal-military state" led to an increase in public expenditures to the introduction of a regressive form of taxation. The worsening municipal financial situation encouraged the sale of communal assets and a consequent revision of revenues. The project will specifically study Tyrol's mountainous areas, where commons were crucial, and create a database on council composition, incomes, and economic inequality, with the goal of better understanding the link between institutional inclusiveness and economic inequality, both in the past and present.
