Students attend the courses during the first and the second semester (in your system you call the first semester as either winter semester or winter term and the second semester as either spring semester or spring term).During the Academic Year 2022-2023 the courses of the first semester will start (normally) on Monday, September 12, 2022, and will finish (normally) on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.During the Academic Year 2022-2023 the courses of the second semester will start (normally) on Monday, February 6, 2023, and will finish (normally) on Friday, May 19, 2023. The term 'normally' indicates that Professors can postpone the starting date and anticipate the ending date of the course. That it is related to many factors influencing the didactic activities implemented in the courses like, number of lecture hours, number of seminar hours, middle term exams, student presentations and so on and so forth. At the end of the first semester student should take exams. The exam period of the first semester courses for the Academic Year 2022-2023 start Monday, December 12, 2022, and finish Friday, February 3, 2023. Please, note the Winter Break-Christmas period: Thursday, December 22, 2022 -- Thursday, January 5, 2023. During the exam period of the first semester courses (we call it Sessione invernale, that is Winter Exams Session) Professors are forced by the Italian National Law to define 3 different Exam dates (we call them 'Appelli'). For each attended course, the student can choose one of these dates to give the related exam. If the student undertakes the exam on a set date (Appello) and fail the exam, s/he ca resit again in one of the other following exam dates. Even more important by the Italian National Law, the student can reject/decline the positive score obtained. In this latter case by the Italian National Law the student can re-sit again in one of the following Exam dates. The system is quite complex indeed! The same procedures do apply during the second semester.The exam period of the second semester for the Academic Year 2022-2023 start Monday, May 22, 2023, and finish Friday, September 8, 2023 . During this exam period (we call it Sessione estiva, that is Summer Exams Session) the Professors are forced by the Italian National Law to define 4 different Exam dates. Normally incoming students take their exam before the Summer break, which during the Academic Year 2022-2023 starts Monday, July 24, 2023, and ends Wednesday, August 30, 2023.But some foreign students (and here we go with my precise answer to your student) decide also to take the exams after the Summer Break, hence in the period starting Thursday, August 31 and ending Friday, September 8, 2023.
