PROJECT ID: 2025-002086 (CUP: B53C26000290005)

Brief description

The main objective of the project is to investigate the relationship between workplace accidents and certain characteristics of the current production system. Specifically, it will examine the links between accidents and technological change, in particular automation and artificial intelligence, as well as how production fragmentation and the use of outsourcing affect the risk of accidents and fatalities at work across different economic sectors.

The empirical analysis, based on econometric models, will draw on original microdata from INAIL on accidents, the production contexts in which they occur, the sectors and occupations most exposed to risks and accidents, and the most common types of accident across the various dimensions analysed.

The Research Unit at the University of Parma is scientifically responsible for the strand of analysis examining the relationship between fragmentation of production chains, namely the reliance on contracting and subcontracting chains, and workplace accidents.

Taken as a whole, the research, which involves the University of Parma together with Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Turin, aims to provide new scientific evidence and analytical tools to guide INAIL’s prevention policies, promoting models of innovation and work organization capable of combining competitiveness, technological development and the protection of workers’ health.
