Brief description
PEAT-GENIE is a European research and innovation project that aims to develop advanced digital tools to improve our understanding, management and conservation of peatlands – ecosystems that are vital for biodiversity and climate regulation.
By integrating generative artificial intelligence, digital twins and environmental data, the project will create a platform capable of simulating various land-management scenarios and assessing their potential effects on water resources, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and land use.
Thanks to intuitive, multilingual interfaces, even non-specialist users will be able to query the environmental models, compare alternative solutions and access useful information to make informed decisions.
The platform will be trialled at pilot sites in four European countries, with the aim of promoting ecosystem restoration, adaptation to climate change and more sustainable environmental management. The solutions developed will be designed to be reusable in other environmental contexts as well, helping to make scientific research and digital technologies more accessible to institutions, researchers and local communities.
The University of Parma plays a central role in the project, coordinating the integration, harmonisation and preparation of environmental data, with a particular focus on the use of advanced statistical methodologies to ensure its quality and reliability, in support of the development of artificial intelligence models.
